Koi Fish Tattoo and their Meaning

Koi fish tattoos symbolize the will to struggle on and on to challenge the obstacles in the path of success. These tattoos are suited for the pioneering individuals who stop at nothing but success. Determined to practice what they believe in, these individuals are courageous enough to brave the unknown and its perils.

Love, hate, courage, etc., are the names of our emotions which are abstract. We cannot realize them as physical entities, so that others can see, touch and experience it. If we stop using the words that are used to represent or convey these abstract concepts (love, hate) we won't be able to talk about them. This tattoo helps a person in exhibiting his innermost feelings as clearly as possible.

Commonly known as arm tattoos, sleeve tattoos are a rage among youth today. Specially girls, mainly because these tattoos can be flaunted when you wish to and easily hidden when you have grabbed enough attention! But what are these tattoos? Well, these are tattoos that are done on the arm or the leg. There are three types of sleeve tattoos; full, half, and quarter. These names signify the area each of these tattoos cover. E.g. full sleeve tattoos are made from shoulder to the wrists or thigh to ankle. Half sleeves cover the half hand, i.e. from shoulder to elbow or from the elbow to the wrist. If done on the leg, it covers the half portion of the leg i.e. from thigh to the knee, knee to ankle. Quarter sleeve tattoos are done from shoulder to bicep.

Koi fish tattoo:

The koi fish have long been a part of the Japanese life.  At almost every temple and sacred place there is a small koi pond.  The koi also know as Carp fish is known throughout China and Japan.  Originally the story came from Buddhist teachings in Chine where it was believed the koi fish would swim upstream and go against the current and even up a waterfall.  The myth states that any koi fish that could swim up the Yellow river and up the waterfall at the mythical place called Dragon Gate would then turn into a dragon.  Therefore in China the koi fish would stand for strength and power and advancement.
This same idealism was adopted throughout Japan.  It was adopted in Japan to such a degree that it has become a part of their daily life and ritual.  In fact large flags of koi fish are flown on Boy's Day to celebrate the strength, energy and power that boys should posses.

Koi Tattoos and their Various Meanings:

The koi fish can be interpreted in different ways. You should know that a koi tattoo with the fish swimming upstream and one swimming downstream has different meanings. Also, a simple koi fish in water has its own meaning. A koi fish tattoo with running water symbolizes courage, the ability to attain goals and to overcome life's difficulties. When the fish is depicted to be swimming upstream, it can symbolize that the person who has got the tattoo, is still struggling with his problem. On the other hand, if it is depicted swimming downstream, it implies that the person has already overcome his difficulties. It also means love for the opposite sex or longing for a specific person. This love can be described as 'romantic love' or 'passionate love'.
