Cacti have built a well-deserved reputation over the years for being prickly and very original, which is why they are increasingly being used in tattoos.

Tattooing is actually an age-old practice, the meaning of which has changed significantly over time. In the past, the Egyptian princesses adorned their skin with permanent tattoos and the Romans used them to mark their slaves. Nowadays, more and more people are decorating their bodies with tattoos because that has become fashionable. But if you just get a tattoo because it's chic, you will sooner or later regret it. A real tattoo stays on the skin for its entire life and will accompany its wearer every day. For this reason, it would be good if it had not only a decorative but also a deep personal meaning for him or her.

Anchor Tattoo: Meaning and Background

There are some motifs that seem completely timeless to us. Although they do experience special weddings from time to time, they remain an integral part of the tattoo scene. The anchor tattoo is currently more popular than ever, and it is one of the oldest tattoo motifs. Find out what the meaning of the anchor tattoo and where it comes from in this article. We also have great pictures of anchor tattoos for you.

The anchor is actually a ship accessory that digs into the seabed and ensures that the boat stays in place. In this way, the anchor can save the lives of the sailors in the event of a storm, as it prevents the boat from drifting away. But it also stood for something resilient in other contexts: in antiquity for anchoring in the Christian faith, in Poland as a symbol of resistance during the German occupation. In the 19th century it had already become an important symbol for seafaring and was soon to be found on the skin of many sailors. It is said that anyone who wore an anchor as a tattoo had already crossed the Atlantic at least once.

Later it was often engraved together with other motifs that we know today as typical old-school tattoos: the swallow, the rose or the steering wheel tattoo. They mark the beginning of western tattoo art, so they are very traditional.

  • The meaning of the anchor tattoo

Many people have the anchor set for fashion reasons without further questioning its meaning. As you can see, the anchor symbolizes above all strength and support; it is not called a lifeline for nothing. The anchor tattoo can still embody these meanings:

  •  protection & hold

In many cases, an anchor stands for the support that one wishes for in stormy times during one's life or has perhaps already experienced. So it should protect and always offer support. It can symbolize friends or family who are always there for you when things get difficult.

  • The snake as a symbol: ambivalent motif

snake-with-roses-colour-arm-tattoo

The snake is one of the most ambivalent and therefore probably also the most interesting tattoo motifs that one can imagine. Presumably because of its ability to shed its skin, the snake can symbolize healing and rebirth in Western culture, but it also symbolizes death and destruction.

So it is not surprising that a snake wraps around the staff of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. But speaking with a forked tongue is also blamed on the snake; it was her powers of persuasion that finally drove Adam and Eve out of Paradise. In Asia, the snake, equated with the dragon, is a sacred animal. However, snake and dragon are two different signs of the zodiac; the snake itself stands for jealousy and is therefore not only rated positively. However, it is viewed with respect and awe.

In China and Japan in particular, tattoos of snakes and even more of dragons are among the most common tattoo motifs. In China in particular, the dragon is a sacred animal, the heavenly messenger, from which the imperial family also descended. The dragon is often depicted as a snake with legs - the boundaries between the two animals are fluid, as in Japan.

In the Japanese art of tattooing, characterized by members of different yakuza clans who are often colorfully tattooed all over their bodies, dragons can stand for aggression, for the respective clan or for the newly chosen name of the member. The body really becomes a canvas here and true works of art are often created, which have enjoyed increasing popularity in this country for several years.
